NEW YORK—Airline officials say hundreds of flights have been canceled as a snowstorm bears down on the Northeast.

A spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says there’s no accumulation as of early Thursday at the New York City area’s airports.

But Steve Coleman says “hundreds of flights” have been canceled in anticipation of bad weather later on.

Some flights in and out of Philadelphia have already been grounded as the snow falls.

Southwest Airlines says it expects delays, diversions and cancellations in airports from Baltimore to Buffalo, N.Y., and has grounded most of its flights into and out of Philadelphia for Thursday.

My buddy was flying from New York’s JFK to Phoenix during this storm.  Because of the weather, he was delayed in reaching the terminal for his morning flight and therefore, missed it.  He was put on stand-by for a flight 8 hours later.  When he called me to tell me his situation (I was going to pick him up) I thought he was screwed.  I was watching MSNBC and the reoprts were coming in with all the cacellations in the area.

As it turned out, he made his stand-by flight and arrived on time.

Weird how this works during stroms.  Lots of flights cancelled and delayed, but yet some go on like nothings wrong.

Sometimes there’s nothing an airline/port can do! Snow storms have been causing alot of trouble recently, can’t wait for the summer sun! (Assuming it’s not going to melt the runways!!)

Ya true...there’s really not a good answer for everything. There is nothing they could do but grin bear it and get through it.

I hear you, but is that true.  Some flights get out, some don’t.  I don’t get it.

Hundreds of flights were canceled Thursday as mechanics for American Airlines and Delta Airlines inspected wiring in aircraft to ensure the planes met U.S. safety rules.
Officials at American, the largest U.S. airline, said 132 flights were canceled, following 318 cancellations on Wednesday. The disruptions affected thousands of passengers, the airline said, and were concentrated at Dallas-Forth Worth International Airport and Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

Delta officials said the airline canceled 275 flights on Thursday. Betsy Talton, an airline spokeswoman, said Delta mechanics were inspecting wiring in 117 MD-88 aircraft. She said the airline had been able to transfer most passengers to other flights and was expecting to return to a normal schedule on Friday.
